ENVY

(noun) the feeling of wanting to be in the same situation as somebody else; the feeling of wanting something that somebody else has

(verb) to wish you had the same qualities, possessions, opportunites, etc, as somebody else.
Or in my terms, that feeling of being smacked in the face with some sort of hard to describe feeling of loss when you witness someone doing way better than you in some area of life most sensitive to you.

I am sure all of us at some points in our life come face to face with this ugly feeling. It just seems unfair how others have it all and are living the good life while we have to content with living in some pok estate in some pok house with pok possessions. Sometimes we even let our envy ferment into jealousy. I mean don’t we all catch ourselves wishing to smack snotty rich brats around the face once in a while?

Inevitably, one will start to question his/ her heritage, even graduating to blaming everyone for his/her ‘sad plight’. It’s all your fault mom why did you have to be poor! It’s all your fault dad why must you be a primary school drop out and not a graduate like my friend’s father! It’s all your fault sis why did you have to be born, you’ve stolen away my well deserved attention! The list goes on and on, maybe you’ve even blamed God. It’s all your fault Lord, why did you make me ME? Why cant i be bartholomew? Lorraine? Margharita? Fernandez? Francesca? –cue other fancy chi-chi names....

Personally i would love to be richer, prettier, taller, more confident, wittier, smarter and more affable, but i know deep down that God loves me as i am and he made me ME because he had a great plan for ME and that plan would never be as wonderful should i be made to resemble someone else. It is easy to grumble and whine about one’s situation but where would that get you? All the lost time wallowing in self pity could be generated into more profitable activities like being a blessing to those around you. It is a most important skill to be CONTENT. Isn’t it wonderful to be like Paul who prudly exclaims in Phil 4:11 – ‘I have learnt to be content whatever the circumstances’. Being content is not about living it up in a mansion rolling with dough or getting lots of compliments about your moviestar looks, it is about embracing the situation you are in with gratefulness and faith that God has put you there for a reason.

As such take pride in being yourself because you are nothing more and nothing less than what God wants you to be. Instead of being bitter about staying in a hdb flat, smile and thank God for having a roof over your head. Instead of grudging God for not giving you a pretty face, thank God for letting you have two eyes a nose and a mouth and hey who’s to judge whether you’re pretty or not? You’re beautiful in God’s sight. See, it’s not that hard to be content, especially when you can do everything through Christ who strengthens you!(Phil 4:13).

Love,
Krystle
