Today for my devotion, I want to share about the Jackie Pullinger conference as it gave me a lot of insights in ministering to the poor. It broaden my thinking and I began to see the bigger picture instead of my shallow thinking of having lots of money in order to to serve the poor..

Before I went to the JP conference, I prayed to God that he would prepare my heart as I was
anxious to receive something from him. Well, it could be receiving a word or renewing my hope and desire to minister to the poor..

So that day i went there expecting to just receive, receive and digest what she said. However, I soon realized that i didn't want to just receive and stop there. I wanted to come back changed in some way just like what Pastor Danny said..

Anyway when I was there, JP was far from what i thought. She wasn’t super filled with the power of the holy spirit which will blow you off your chair like some evangelists. Instead her voice was holy and melodious filled with a gentle touch of the spirit.. Perhaps its because of her voice that I could not really catch what she was saying at times..

Contributing to the fact that there was not any point form made it harder to understand. Even so, it does not matter as her humility and love for the poor was overwhelming.. There were times it was as if I could hear the desperate cry of her heart beseeching God’s people to do something about the poor and not just ignore their existence.. The poor needs us which then reminds me of the sausage story where she was brought to this impoverished family with just a cloth above their heads sheltering them from the intense sunlight and merciless rain.. Yet all she did was to buy a sausage as she had insufficient cash with her as an act of kindness and love.

Even though she did not have enough cash with her, that did not hinder her to serve the needs of this family.. I think this story really changed my view of serving the poor. In the past, my dad used to mention that it is more important to spend your time earning more money so that it will be possible to serve the poor. However when Jackie said that money was the last thing you need, I was stunned. I thought money was everything and I could spend it on some food or necessities for the poor but God looks at your heart as it is more important to give out of love and obedience..

Some wealthy people give so that they will feel better or perhaps they feel obliged to do so but there is no love when they give. Therefore, I think the true purpose and meaning of giving is thus lost until you humble yourself and allow God’s love to once again take over so that you will give out of love..
