The Power of Thanksgiving

This question came to me when I was watching a clip from ‘Walk the Line’- When life hits you hard and when you are at your dying breath, what will your response be? Johnny Cash sung a hymn in attempt of his first recording and was rejected by the manager, stating that it doesn’t reflect his life even at the most crucial moment.

I thought about it, and was about to agree with the concept of the statement, until I took a second take and reflect on it again- on my worst times, even more I should sing for the Lord, because He has blessed me so much and by singing praises, it will only reinforce my faith in Him, believing that even this too, will pass.

I realized that many people are being more unappreciative of relationships or success because it is a common assumption that it is done through our own strength. Perhaps we would think of others’ ‘minimal’ contribution once in awhile, but the efforts are all mine, mine, mine. But think about it, is it, really? All the times when you are ‘lucky’ that ‘coincidently’ this and this happened so that everything can be smooth flowing?

I thank God every time for every good thing that has happened to me, because of the blessings that He has bestowed upon me, even it is as small as being able to catch a bus at the time when I was running late; that the weather didn’t rain on a Sunday or any other days when a big event was going on. It’s these little answered prayers that assured me that His presence is with me and that He listens to me, regardless of how trivial the situation may be.

Hence, even when the going gets tough and when God seems silent, I always found singing songs of worship comforting even though I may not ‘feel’ the emotions that I felt during the good times. Yet, by just singing how great God is, it reminds me of God’s grace, mercy and blessings during the good times and it reminds me that since God has blessed me so much during those times, He wouldn’t let me go even at these times.

It is so easy to give up when we find God silent time after time of prayers and crying out loud. But sometimes, silence is God’s challenge for our faith- that we will continue to depend on Him even more in times of sorrows as much as we did in times of joy.

So sing praise, thank God! It is a privilege that we, Christians, have because we know that our saviour has blessed us with so much and we know that His presence is with us all this while. Not everyone in this world has the privilege to express their gratitude because they do not know who to express it to.
