A Manageable Deity

"But now I fear that you will be tricked, just as Eve was tricked by that lying snake. I am afraid that you might stop thinking about Christ in an honest and sincere way. We told you about Jesus, and you received the Holy Spirit and accepted our message. But you let some people tell you about another Jesus. Now you are ready to receive another spirit and accept a different message." - 2 Corinthians 3-4

Moses was up on the mountain meeting God, Aaron came back down to the people. While waiting for Moses, Aaron asked all the people to bring all their gold and with it he made a golden calf idol. This is the same Aaron who had witnessed God's power (bringing Israel out of Egypt), His glory (when God descended on the mountain) and His miracles (providing mana).

Making the golden calf was an easier way than to face God's glory, coz we are afraid to be totally exposed and die in His glory. The people worshiped the golden calf and still called it Yahweh coz they could still get what their hearts desired and yet fulfill that inner need to worship a higher being. This is actually rebellion! Subconsciously we began to serve "our Jesus" whose will is in accordance with our own desires. Presto! We have a manageable Deity! One who will always give us what we want! It is a subtle deception, not a blatant lie.

In our deception we tell ourselves that 'God knows my heart' and 'Jesus is my friend.', which is both true. But often we make this comment in justification of actions that contradict His covenant. Our image of His glory is formed by our limited perceptions rather than by His true image as revealed through His living Word on the mountain.

The tough question that we have to ask ourselves is: Is the Jesus we serve the One seated at the right hand of Majesty on high, or is He a different Jesus, who has been shaped by the ways and desires of the society we live in according to our own desires?

Lord forgive me. Instead of being like Moses, who had that holy fear of You that made him walk righteous in your sight,so that he could come into your presence on the mountain, I became like Aaron, who even after witnessing Your power and miracles chose to back away down the mountain, away from your glory, and fashioned a 'God' according to my own desires. You are not a manageable God, you are a Magnificent God! Teach me to fear you so that i may walk in holiness and righteousness. Teach me to know You through Your living Word. Amen!
