A Point to Ponder About

Jesus Tells Peter of his denials

John 13:36-38

36: Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”

37: Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38: Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I will tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown (deny) me three times!”

Peter’s First Denial

John 18:15-17

15: Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.

16: But Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17: “You are not one of his disciples, are you?” the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.”

Peter’s Second Denial

John 18:25

25: As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, “You are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, saying “I am not.”

Peter’s Third Denial

John 18:26-27

26: One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the olive grove?”

27: Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.

Peter’s three denials came as a shock to me as I read it. I asked myself how would a man like Peter who was so faithful to Jesus and shared a close relationship with him, deny him. Jesus even warned Peter that he is going to deny him yet he still denied.

We verbally declare that “Yes! I am a Christian and I love Jesus.” If you all agree to this, I now pose a challenge, do our lives reflect that? I feel that Christians today are only what I called Sunday Christians. They only behave like Christians on Sundays, Cell Group days and Prayer Meeting days. Whereas on the other days we fail to uphold the name of Christians, we behave far from Christ-like.

Now let us look at the reason why Peter denied the Lord. I believe that the reason that Peter denied was because of FEAR, the Fear of Humiliation, the Fear of Embarrassment, the Fear of Prosecution and to sum it all up the Fear of MAN. I sometimes wonder why do we fear man more then God. One of the most important things in the walk with Jesus is to be a God-fearing person. We must always remember that God is the ruler of everything, and man is part of his creation. Why should we be more afraid of the creation rather then the creator? So don’t care what man may think! Just care about what God thinks!

Bringing back to the topic on denying Jesus, by living a life that is not pleasing to God (behaving far from Christ-like) we are already denying the Lord. We must constantly remind ourselves that we should behave like Christians everyday of our lives and not just when we feel like it, or when we feel convicted. God deserves our worship and praises; we shouldn’t just go to God only when we need him.

Jesus Restores Peter

John 21:15-19

15: When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16: Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know what I love you.” Jesus said, “take care of my sheep”.

17: The third time he said to him, “Simon Son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because the Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He Said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

18: I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”

19: Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

We can see from here, no matter what we do wrong, Jesus is always quick and just to forgive us. He forgave Peter for denying him. I believe he will also forgive us for our sins and wrongdoings.

Peter stumbled when he denied the Lord. But look at the way he handle the situation after Jesus restored him. From denying Jesus, he turns into an exemplarily warrior for Christ who ran all out for God. I believe that all of us have stumble and fall in our walk with Jesus. But remember it’s not how you stumble but it’s how you get up from it and continue your walk. I believe we all can rebound back as strongly as Peter did.

So now, how are you going to rebound back whenever you fall today?
