Fear the Lord

So I’ve been taking this class – Biblical Literature – and it’s been tremendously helpful in enabling me to understand the Bible in a deeper manner. I’ve learnt about the history of the Bible, and read the first 5 books of the Bible in a mere 2 wks, and it struck me that these people in the Old Testament were really sinful! Sin has been around since a long time ago, and if you read the OT, you’ll see that the people were no better than you and I. The only difference between the past and the present is God’s grace. I realized that when people sin in the past, God usually immediately strikes them down and they die without a chance to repent or even say sorry. Jesus had not yet come to die on the cross for their sins, so whatever evils they committed, they had to deal with the consequences right away. That must have been scary!

But thanks to Jesus' sacrifice for us, we don't have to live in fear that any stupid action we do will cost us our lives. However, maybe we take things for granted nowadays. We take God’s grace upon our lives for granted. When was the last time you avoided sin and did not succumb to temptations because you feared the Lord and His wrath? Many times we rationalize and tell ourselves that it’s ok to keep sinning, maybe because we think our sin is ‘small’ and doesn’t hurt anyone, or maybe it’s because we know that God will forgive us, so we can just sin now and ask for forgiveness later since He’s a God of grace.

But, the Bible says
Psalm 111:10
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.”
Psalm 112:1
“Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in His commands.”

We often fear things in life; even Buddhists fear their gods, and that's why they obey. We fear consequences, bad stuff, that's why we do the right thing.
But what happened to our fear of the Lord? If we feared Him, we would not be gossiping abt our frens, we would not be lying to our parents, we would not be cheating on tests. Granted, we’re not perfect. But when we really have the fear of the Lord in us, we will think twice about sin because we know God sees all that we do.

When we fear the Lord, we fear nothing else.
