Salt of the earth

There was once an experiment performed on dogs. The dogs were locked and chained in cages and given electric shocks over and over again. At first they howled, they barked, they ran about desperately trying to escape. But, after many repetitions of the electric shock, the dogs stopped trying. When given a shock, they didn’t howl, didn’t bark, didn’t move.
So the experimenters tried removing the chains and gave the dogs another shock. Still, they didn’t howl, didn’t bark, didn’t move.
They then tried opening the cage, allowing the dogs to run towards freedom. Still, when the shock came, they didn’t howl, didn’t bark, didn’t move.
The experimenters were pretty puzzled. They tried starving the dogs for a day, and put food outside the open cage with other dogs eating the food. Still, when the shock came, they didn’t howl, didn’t bark, didn’t move.
So the experiment was called ‘conditioned hopelessness’.

This shows a similar situation in the world. There are so many people out there who don’t know Jesus, and they’re living each day for the pleasure of the moment. They don't have hope in their lives because they have nothing eternal to work towards. They see an open door to Jesus, but they’re blinded to it because they’re used to living in the world of hopelessness.

So the experimenters tried putting unconditioned, normal dogs in the cage with the conditioned ones. They turned on the electric shock and opened the door of the cage. The unconditioned dog howled, barked and ran out of the cage in a few seconds. Then, something amazing happened. The other dogs saw what had happened. One dog started barking. One dog took a small step towards the door. One dog finally ran out, and the others followed suit.

The hopeless dogs just needed someone to guide them into freedom. They just needed someone to suffer with them and feel their pain, and then lead them into a better place.

The unconditioned dog symbolizes us Christians. Like Matthew 5:13-14 says, we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We are to bring light to people's lives, to suffer with the people Jesus loves, and to bring them into the kingdom of God.
