"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake." Philippians 1:21-24 (NASB)

"For to me, living is for Christ, and dying is even better. Yet if I live, that means fruitful service for Christ. I really don't know which is better. I'm torn between two desires: Sometimes I want to live, and sometimes I long to go and be with Christ. That would be far better for me, but it is better for you that I live." - Philippians 1:21-24 (NLT)

When i read this part, i was thinking: "Haha! Paul is like me! He also thinks that it's better to die early so that can go back to God the Father and escape all the tough things in life!" But then he also said that to remain on in the flesh is better for the sake of the people he is discipling.

This gives me a new insight into the first part of "to live is Christ and to die is gain". For Paul, to live means to life a life that pleases God and that would mean fruitful labor. That's good! But to die is gain, coz you return to be with Jesus and God the Father. Better still! But Paul chose to 'stay on' coz it was better for his people. Paul goes on to say in verse 25-26:

"I am convinced of this, so I will continue with you so that you will grow and experience the joy of your faith. Then when I return to you, you will have even more reason to boast about what Christ Jesus has done for me."

Now that's the Discipler's heart. To die to your own desires and always put the interest of your sons/daughters first. Living as a testimony for them to always glorify God for what He has done in both yours and their life. Pointing them towards God.

Time for a reality check. Are you discipling your people right? Is your heart right at wanting them to glorify God and not you? Is it a case of their interests over yours? I am convicted that i have much to grow in this aspect. Let's go deep together. It ALWAYS about God.
