Devotion #44

As Lionel touched on the topic of faith in his previous post, I have reposted an old post on the same topic. It's the very first devotion post on this blog.

Hope this time round, more people can understand.

DEVOTION #1(Xiong)

Faith vs. Works

Dear all.

I would like to share some thoughts from Pastor Roland's sharing at yesterday's congregation meeting.

For those who attended the meeting, you will find Pastor's passage taken from the Book of James 2:14 -23. Actually, the whole passage on Faith vs. Works ends at v26.Key verses that I find it useful for meditation, is verse 20 to 22.

Verse 20 says: But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless.

Verse 21 says: Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered up Issac his son on the altar?

Verse 22 says: You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected.

I believe we all can take from these verses, the knowledge that faith and works have to go together. That is also one of key summary from Pastor Roland. Just want to add to this, if you notice in verse 22, not only does faith and works come together, but because of works, faith was perfected.

Perfection. Aka, made completed.Works makes your Faith 100%. Totality. Fullness.

Need proof?

Go just a few pages from the Book of James to the Book of Hebrews. Hebrews Chapter 11. The famous Hall of Faith that held chronicles of godly men and women who was described by God as...faithful. Read on, and you find many many examples of faith + work = perfection.

Isn't wonderful, that Hebrews chapter 11 begins with this verse: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. You can't see, yet you believe and hope.

That's faith.

Once heard a story about this missionary who shared about the difficulty he had in sharing the defination of faith to a group of non-believers from some african tribe. For a long time, he couldn't find a good word in their own native language...until God showed him to use a simple chair to demonstrate faith. That faith essentially...is simply putting your full weight on the chair. You sit on the chair, knowing with confidence, that the chair can take your weight.

Sharing this, since this is what FCBC is all about. A church that is devoted to building "Faith Communities". The faith community that all guys and gals in DE tribe can be proud of <-- Copied from Pastor Roland. "Be proud of our church!"

Have a blessed day.

-Xiong
