Devotion #30 Bringing Glory to God through Difficult Times (Xiong)

Before I start, I would like to ask the following question and try answer this before continuing.

Q: Have you wonder what brings glory to God?

My devotion today is from the Book of James, and a familar passage. This passage recently became a passage that consistently has been speaking to me during this period of my life.

James 1: 1-5 (NASB) : "(v1) James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings. (v2) Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, (v3) knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. (v4) And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (v5) But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

There are three main themes in this chapter, namely a) trials or sufferings, b) perserverance and c) wisdom. We will walk through all three of them.

Lets consider the first part of this chapter. James 1:1-4

(v1) James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings. (v2) Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, (v3) knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. (v4) And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Exactly what does these trials and hardship mean?

Trial is not Temptation. Temptation is an enticement to do something for your own sinful pleasure and selfish satisfaction. Temptation is sowed from a thought in our minds, which when allowed to grow from a bud to full bloom, becomes sin through action.

Trial on the other hand, is being tested in faith and strength through difficult circumstances.

Temptation does not come from God. God tests, but He does not tempt.

So one may think he/she is under trial when actually, he/she is under temptation.

Key word here is in verse 2, the word WHEN. The Bible did not say "If" but used the word "when" in relating to the possibility of encountering hardship. Thus, it is only a matter of when, that everyone will face some life crisis or trials when our faith is being tested. It's not will it happen or not, but when it will happen.

Acknowledging and accepting that trials in your life will happen regardless of whether you like it or not, will help you in your response.

Most of the time, trials come not when you feel you are strongest, but when you are the weakest. That's when our testing is most severe.

What then, are our rewards if we persevere? Lets go to more scriptures for answers.

Romans 5:1-5 "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."

Chain event becomes like this: Suffering --> Perseverance --> Characer --> Hope --> Receive God's love!

Simple?

Also, Romans 2:7 says "To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life."

Moving on.

1 Peter 1:3-9 says the following...

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls."

Notice in 1 Peter, trials occurs in our lives which resulted in our grief, but all these come so that our faith will be proven genuine! And not only does our faith gets authenticated, we also give praise, glory and honor to God!

Means this...as we perserve through trials, God is glorified.

Have you wonder what it takes to bring glory to God? Congregational worship in church? Attending cell group? Reading the Bible front to back and back to front?

God says He is glorified when we encounter trials and we persever through them.

No wonder James says to "Consider it all joy when we encounter various trials!" Because our encountering of trials, brings glory to God!

Lastly, in verse 5, "(v5) But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

Wisdom is different from Knowledge. Wisdom is the ability to discern wise choices and chosing them under difficult circumstances. With this, I end with Jeremiah 33:3.

Jeremiah 33:3 "Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know."

In summary, encountering trials in our lives...
a) gives glory to God! (1 Peter 1:3-9)
b) makes us joyful because our perseverance through trials gives glory to God (1 James 1:2)
c) produces endurance, and after which we will be lacking in nothing (1 James 1:4)
d) will help us receive God's love (Romans 5:1-5)
e) will help authenticate our faith and prove it is genuine (1 Peter 3:9)
e) affirmation of salvatian through perseverance (Romans 2:7)
