Devotion #4 When The Wine Runs Out (Xiong)

Devotion for Pastor Melvyn's sermon on Saturday, 19th Nov 2005. Many missed this due to the under-17 encounter weekend.

Passage is taken from Gospel of John 2:1-11, the very 1st miracle performed by Jesus in His ministry (3 days after His baptism).

John 2:1-11 says:
"
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.

When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."

Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.

Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him. When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now." This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
"

The turning of water to wine marks the very first miracle that Jesus performed in His ministry. Other than it being the first miracle, there are a few special points to take note:

a. First miracle has nothing to do with healing or deliverance or resurrecting a dead person (this would really stir up the whole community!)

b. First miracle by God after 400 years of "silence". This 400 years period spans the entire timeline from the Book of Malachi (last book of the Old Testament) and ends right after Jesus turned the water to wine.

c. It was performed at a wedding. A celebratory event.

d. It manifested God's glory and made His disciples believed in Him.

There are many things unique about this event and I believe God has many things to speak through it. I will list the sermon points here and add what I have been reflected so far.

1. He cares for our essentials - Admit our failings

The very 1st event where God celebrated was the wedding of Adam and Eve. And amazingly, the very 1st event that Jesus chose to start His ministry was also at a wedding.

I think Jesus is a party person. And He definately appreciates good food! Even in the end times, God said He has prepared a banquet for us (Revelation 19). Yummy. Praise God~

In the olden days, weddings in Israel last 7 days. And during these days, the most important thing at the wedding (other than the groom and bride of course), happens to the wine. Wine in essence, actually means "joy".

Now, to run out of wine at a wedding, would literally mean to run out of joy. Some of us are like that. We got distracted halfway in this journey of life and misplaced/emptied out our joy. We have run out of "wine" and God needs to come, and perform a miracle by restoring the "wine". Jesus can restore joy in our lives, just as He restored the wine.

Sometimes, we think God will only be bothered by the big things in our lives. In fact, God cares about everything in our lives, big or small. And we never asked of Him and relied on our strength, which always isn't enough.

All it takes however, is for us to admit our failings. Mary herself took that first step by asking and pleading with Jesus to help. Shouldn't we do the same by going to God when we found ourselves needing help?

2. He changes us into the extraordinary - Act in Faith

It is not a matter of re-arranging business that God is interested here. He is interested in transformation! (If anyone needs a defination of transformation, read devotion #3 and you will have your answers there)

Water to Wine, is definately not a re-arrangement.

Water to Wine, is a transformation of the inside. A touch of the Master's hand. In fact, Jesus chose to use ceremonial washing jars (part of the old law), the ones that is used for superficial cleansing, to become jars that hold wine!

Water to Wine, is to change a new heart, a new person!

However, there is a pre-requisite. Verse 5 and 7 say we need to act in faith. Mary had the faith and asked Jesus for help. Other than Mary, there were also another group of people that had faith too.

They were the servants who filled the jars. Jesus just instructed them to fill the jars, but never said how much. And the servants filled all the jars to the brim. "According to the level of your faith, it shall be done." Luke 17:6

3. He celebrates us with extravagence - Accept the Father

Lets play with the numbers.

The Bible states one jar can hold between 20 to 30 gallons of water. So you can say the 6 jars are of different sizes most probably. So the minimum and maximum quantity of wine, in total, will be between 120 gallons to 180 gallons.

4 liters makes a gallon.

Do the maths, and we will come up with 480 liters of wine, minimum.

And it's 480 liters of the BEST WINE. Not grape juice but the top class vintage wine. A quantity that the wedding folks can never finish.

God here, other than the providence, showed He provides in abundance! And He provides them lavishingly.

Luke 15 is commonly known as the story of the prodigy son. If you see it as the story about the Father, you will see He lavishes extravagantly on His son...He ran towards the son from afar; He puts on the best robe and sandals on the son; restore the son's status with a ring, the fattened calf....and holds a party and celebrated!

The Father in Luke 15, provides lavishingly and in extravagance for the son.

*******************************

I think everyone needs miracles in their lives. Not 1, not 2 of them but a whole basket of them. And we already have quite a few in our basket. Our birth is already one. God already knew us by forming us in our mother's womb (Psalms139:13-14)! Our spiritual birth (salvation) is another one. So is every answered prayer. How many miracles in your life have you counted?

God restoring our joy and transforming us from the inside, is the prayer our DE tribe should always make daily, both individually and corporately.
