Devotion #3: Setting Our Minds on Things Above (Xiong)

Dear all.

I will start off with one of my favourite passages in the Bible.

Colossians 3:2-4 "Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory."

Shall share my reflection here on Pastor Mel's Word 2 Saturday's back. For those who need a recap, here are the four pointers from that sermon. I will also try link to Pastor Roland's sharing on Wednesday congregation meeting and also Nigel's devotion posting.

"Don't Worry Be Happy" (Philippians 4:2-9)

1. Praise - The Singing of Our Hearts
2. Pray - The Hope in Our Hearts
3. Ponder -The Mastery of the Mind
4. Practice - The Working of Our Will

I would like to expand farther on just point #3, the Mastery of the Mind. There are lots to reflect on from just this 1 point.

Our entire being is made up of Spirit, Soul and Body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Notice that the Bible explicitly writes the order of Spirit, Soul and Body in this manner, instead of the common "Body, Soul and Spirit" ordering that the world uses. In simple Bible sense, Spirit > Soul > Body. Of course, I am not advocating you can neglect your body by not exercising (most of us are guilty =P) or abusing it. I am just saying God places high importance on the "real" you. The one that is inside you, rather than the one that's on the surface (appearance, physical body).

Our minds is, but 1 aspect of our soul. Our mind contains memory, thoughts and reasoning, which when combined, gives intellect. However, our mind is more than just intellect.

Our mind gives us comprehension of life.

And in turn, our comprehension of life translates into our behaviour; And our behaviour can be seen in how we deal with life on a daily basis.

Pretty clear so far? Simply put, our mind determines how we react to circumstances, how we live our lives, explains why each one of us can see from different persepective, given the same situation...

When we start off as Christians, we are limited in what we see as acceptable in our minds and how we perceive reality. Overcoming these limits that are build into our minds prior to us becoming believers, is in fact what is known as transformation. (Does the phrases "He/She is a transformed person" or "He/She is living a transformed life" ring any bells to you?) Common phrases used in church context but not much explained.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit."

We are created in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27). Therefore, to be transformed or to live a transformed life, means to be changed into the likeness of Christ, His mind and His character.

But because of Sin, we cannot overcome the limits of our minds by ourselves...we need Jesus.

A carnal (worldly) mind results in death, as interpretated from the following passage below. Or to be more accurate, a carnal mind is death.

Romans: 8:6-8 "For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God."

Pastor Roland talked about pleasing God by having faith on Wednesday night. Same story here. If you have a carnal mind, mind set on the flesh, God says it is hostile to him, and certainly not pleasing.

The solution? Colossians 3:2-3. The very passage that I started out in this devotion. Verse 2 starts by instructing us to set our minds on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

Setting our minds on the things above is to ensure that all issues on our minds are being subjected to and managed according to what is above. To manage our mind and our behaviour.

Romans 2:1-2 ~ "Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect."

If we belong to God through Christ, then the kind of mind we should desire to have...is a Christ-Like mind! God has given us, as believers, a Christ-Like mind (1 Corinthians 2:16b).

Nigel's earlier post on giving thanks and having a heart of gratitude, starts from a decision in the mind.

To end, lets go to one of the famous passages in the Word, in Philippians. Philippians 4:6-9 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. "

Verse 8 asked for believers to dwell on things that are worthy of praise. And we cannot do that, unless we first have learned to give thanks and have a heart of gratitude.

Mastery of the mind starts by giving thanks. Have you done that today?
