Devotion #13 A Study of Psalms 1 (Xiong)

Dear all.

For today's devotion, I shall share a personal reflection on one of my favourite passages written by the Psalmist; one which also happens to be one of the more popular psalms for study. Psalms 1.

Psalms 1 says: "How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked. Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish."

Psalms 1 starts off by describing what a righteous man IS NOT and DOES NOT DO. Strange? Lets look farther into the verse.

Verse 1 has three main sub-parts. Paraphasing the verse, The righteous man is one who is blessed....and does not do the following:

(I) Walk in the counsel of the wicked
(II) Stand in the path of sinners
(III) Sit in the seat of scoffers

Notice the "action verbs" in verse 1. Walk...Stand....Sit. These 3 words requires an active partcipation from one's part. One need to delibrate on walking with the counsel of the wicked; One need to chose to stand in the path of sinners; And lastly, One need to purposefully sit in the seat of scoffers.

In short, one chose to be associate himself/herself with the wicked or the righteous. And it has to be delibrate and purposefully done.

One more observation on verse 1. The progression of a wicked man...is progressive. First, you walk. Walking gives one less inertia as compared to standing.

Meaning, its easier for a walking man to walk away, as compared to a man that's standing still. And of course, finally, the sitting down makes the task of moving away...the hardest. What I can draw from this Walk/Stand/Sit analogy used in this verse is referring to the different levels of identification with the wicked.

In short, "Walking" Level<"Standing" Level<"Sitting" Level

To make this analogy even simplier to understand, just imagine you and the brothers/sisters in the cell group you belong to. First of all, you walk with them to TC for service. Then you stand with them outside TC at 445pm waiting to chiong seats. And finally after service and dinner, go up parkway builders', gather around and sit down for a cell group gombaya session~ Each scenario showing the increasing levels of committment and identification!

Hahaha...

Okie, moving on.

A righteous man's delight is in the law of the LORD. The law of the LORD refers to the sword of the Spirit, the word of God...the Bible. Now not only does the righteous man delights himself in the word of God, he meditates the word of God, DAY AND NIGHT. If you ask me to teach you the techniques on meditating, I will ask you if you know how to worry. If you know how to worry, you will know how to meditate.

Essentially, it's what you fill your mind with.

So the righteous man spends alot of his time (read DAY AND NIGHT) on the word of God. But what happes to him if he does that?

The list of rewards is fantastic. Because verse 3 promises that he will be like a tree:
(I) firmly planted by streams of water,
(II) which yields its fruit in its season
(III) And its leaf does not wither;

Finally, and in whatever he does, he prospers. Talk about promises of prosperity in whatever you do! Strong and with firm roots. Never fearing of drought. Yielding a fruitful life. Leaves that are ever-green.

If you want to prosper, simple solution is just to read the word of God!

Now contrast that to verse 4 describing the wicked as being like chaff, which the wind drives away. Chaff here are dried out plants; Heaven and Earth difference from the plant that was described in verse 3. Not to mention the fury of judgement (verse 5).

Finally, verse 6 says, " For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish." One key observation: God is not condemning the wicked. God is not opposing the wicked. God is not disproving wicked. In fact, God is only condemning, opposing and disprove the way of the wicked. Can see the difference?

The former is against the person. The latter is against the ways of the person.

I can only conclude God is love. He loves us as His sons and daughters. But it's our ways (how we live) that determines our standing with God.
